Until the end when all you can do is beg for more. Apr 28, Ivan Amberlake rated it it was amazing Shelves: Eli Constant is an amazing writer.

N, which I loved so much I went on to read another of her books, a full-length novel, Mastic, which was very beautifully written.

Dead Trees is a dystopian novel where humanity is attacked by undergrounders — humanoid Eli Constant is an amazing writer. The main character is Elise Swanson, a year-old widow and mom of two little girls, fleeing from one place to another in hope to find shelter from the undergrounders, which is never an easy task.

Sep 23, San rated it it was amazing. Some of these book have been really good and some run of the mill average.

Dead Trees is up there with the best. It build on a world of horrific and unruly beasties running a mock on a forever changed world.

The main Character Elise is a strong, intelligent and a fighter and you will her on to keep her children safe throughout the story.

The underlying love story plays out well and add a different dynamic as the story progresses. View all 6 comments. Mar 08, Shauna Brookman rated it it was amazing.

Not my usual book but loved it! Fast paced and totally gripping! Dec 15, Becky Stephens rated it really liked it Shelves: In this dystopian sci-fi novel, we meet Elise, a mom with two young girls trying to survive an invasion of subterranean humanoids.

After a harrowing rescue at the safe zone, Elise is drafted to use her scientific knowledge to reclaim humanity. This is one of those novels that stands out from others in its genre.

You know how we say kids will grow out of their fear of the dark? The story is well-paced with action in all the right places.

After all, some of us barely passed high school biology. Elise is a strong female protagonist, which I always admire in an apocalyptic world.

She had her moments of indecisiveness and bonehead mistakes, but that just makes her character feel more real. And while there are plenty of intense, scary scenes, there are just enough heart-warming moments to keep it all balanced.

Aside from the spelling issues, Dead Trees is an exciting, yet scary and suspenseful read, and I recommend it to all dystopia and science fiction fans.

I received this book from the author in exchange for an honest review. This review originally posted to Twisted Book Junkie.

Feb 09, Gail rated it it was amazing. The world ended, not with disease or famine, but by the eruption of a subterranean race that has evolved under and with us all along.

You are a single mother with two little girls and the only safe thing to do is stay on the move. How do you cope, how do you function, how do you survive?

Well this may be the chronicle of exactly how it happens. I want to believe that I can be this strong, I want to believe that I will be a survivor if something cataclysmic ever happens, but when I read this stor The world ended, not with disease or famine, but by the eruption of a subterranean race that has evolved under and with us all along.

I want to believe that I can be this strong, I want to believe that I will be a survivor if something cataclysmic ever happens, but when I read this story I felt things I never thought I would feel.

I believe my heart was actually pounding a few times when the scrapes would be a bit too close. I am in love with this story, and with this idea of the things that can happen when humans stick together.

Now if we can just outsmart our enemy…. I am not sure I can wait for Dead Trees May 13, Jett Cat rated it really liked it.

This was an action packed story of a mothers fight for her children. I think everyone who reads this apocalyptic tale of hope will take away something a little different.

Quick paced and very easy to read. Jul 14, BozBozo rated it really liked it. I simply enjoyed this book. Morally, ethically - it makes you think about racial prejudice in the current day, not just in the "what if" setting of the story.

This story of beasties and hymns is both intriguing and horrifying. The author writes with such finesse , it keeps you wanting more!

I highly recommend this one. Jun 08, Melanie Marsh rated it it was amazing. It caught me off guard in all of the best possible ways.

Believe it or not, it does take a lot to surprise me, but I really do love good surprises! Dead Trees follows the story of Elise Swanson, a mother of 2 who is making her way from her home in Georgia to her ultimate destination of Alaska after the world as she knows it has crumbled around her.

They sound really nasty, violent, and peace negotiations are not an option. One group went above ground humans and the other below ground beasties.

As a mom, one of my biggest fears is being in a situation where the safety of my children is being threatened. Most of the post-apocalyptic themed books that I have read have not really addressed the concept of trying to protect your children and yourself at the same time.

Eli Constant does a great job of showing the strength of a mother trying to keep her children safe in a world gone crazy.

Elise is a great mother doing the best she can on her own, trying to help her children retain some level of innocence in such a bleak world. I hope that if I were ever in this sort of situation, I could be the kind of mom Elise is.

Normally my eyes will start to glaze over and I just completely lose interest at the first hint of science.

Anyone that can keep my interest in the presence of that level of science deserves stars out the whazoo. The twists within Dead Trees are surprising and full of new to me types of ideas that I really enjoyed being introduced to.

Dead Trees is more than just a surface story. Jul 09, Pheebz rated it it was amazing. David is no longer around to help, the Beasties got him.

How do you potty train a toddler when a bathrooms are not easily accessible,is but one issue that plagues her. Life on the run in search of safety is hard enough without haveing two little ones in tow.

They leave Georga and tries to find the place that the radio voice keeps promising as a safe haven. Along the way she meets up with Jason Chambers,He believes his Ex wife and son are dead.

He is annoying at first to Elise and is not going to take No for an answer. He feels the need to help out this little family.

Even if it is to help Elise drive. Two drivers is better than one. So Elise relents and lets Jason get into the van,he seems capable enough.

Along the way he is reunited with his son Mikael and his girl Allison. Together they find temporary safety. Each of them are put to work in the field of employment they had before the Beasties came through the ground and started to exterminate their kind, humans that is.

Elise was a scientist and Jason a mechanic. Elise need to get along with Dr. Peters who seem cold to her if she wants to stay. They have a nursery and school classes for the kids as well as a play room for both young and old.

But this is only the beginning pick up the book to find out more. Find out what happens to Jason and this little group. Eli Constant is a Pioneer in the field of Monsters and the Apocolypse.

This is a fresh take on the Apocalypse and how it was brought forth. Eli constant made 3D characters, complete with real human reactions and emotions.

This world she has created is frightening and it shows the length that a mother will go to protect her own.

The places described in this world is so real you can see it. Her knowledge of the scientific field and medicine is true to life, yet it does not bog down the story with a bunch of scientific jargen.

I can hardly wait to read book 2. Mar 19, Larry rated it liked it. This book, which I read for Kindle, shared with so many other Kindle books the hundreds of instances of wrong grammar, wrong spelling, wrong punctuation, and completely wrong words being used like calling a couple "viral" when "virile" was meant.

More importantly to me, the first half of the book, before the protagonists reached Washington, consisted of very little character development mixed with dozens of repetitions of the same theme: The violence was excessive and not enjoyable.

I almost quit reading the book after getting tired of this gory pattern over and over again. The second half of the book, after they reached Washington, was for the most part less gratuitously gory but more absurd, with its totally unbelievable fake science, like talking about concealing a man-made virus molecularly large in an "artificial oxygen atom" impossible, and molecularly small.

Jan 21, Jamie rated it really liked it Shelves: I would like to start by saying, this book would make a great movie. Elise is one kick-butt momma.

She will do anything to protect her young children from the beasties. I really like her as a character. She is strong, super scientist smart, and has a sarcastic sense of humor.

She is also willing to let people in when she has been on her guard for so long, and grieving the loss of her husband. Her and her young children are on the road to find sanctuary from the "under-grounders" by radio concord I would like to start by saying, this book would make a great movie.

Her and her young children are on the road to find sanctuary from the "under-grounders" by radio concordances. I was constantly wondering if they would succeed in making the beasties more civilized humans, or if they truly were smarter and more advanced than humans.

Overall, I enjoyed the suspense when they were on the road, fighting under-grounders, the sarcastic humor narration Elise had going on in her head, and when there were loving conversations.

Now I have to wait for the next book! Feb 13, Halima Rahman rated it it was amazing. Rarely am I left speechless, I usually have plenty to say, but as I reflected on this novel, I realized there would be no surefire way to describe this book but to say "amazing!

In the second section Avni uses more varied themes, but always returns to the subject of passion and its discontents. Written in a rich language, in a refined rhythm and with carefully chosen words.

The torments of desire are cloaked by the direct and ironic tone. Yedioth Ahronoth Avni resembles Jean Genet in his attempt to find beauty in a dark and painful world, and in the decadence, decline, even calamity pervading his homosexual life.

The Book of the Dead was part of a tradition of funerary texts which includes the earlier Pyramid Texts and Coffin Texts , which were painted onto objects, not papyrus.

Some of the spells included were drawn from these older works and date to the 3rd millennium BCE. A number of the spells which made up the Book continued to be inscribed on tomb walls and sarcophagi , as had always been the spells from which they originated.

The Book of the Dead was placed in the coffin or burial chamber of the deceased. There was no single or canonical Book of the Dead.

The surviving papyri contain a varying selection of religious and magical texts and vary considerably in their illustration.

Some people seem to have commissioned their own copies of the Book of the Dead , perhaps choosing the spells they thought most vital in their own progression to the afterlife.

The Book of the Dead was most commonly written in hieroglyphic or hieratic script on a papyrus scroll, and often illustrated with vignettes depicting the deceased and their journey into the afterlife.

Wallis Budge , and was brought to the British Museum , where it currently resides. The Book of the Dead developed from a tradition of funerary manuscripts dating back to the Egyptian Old Kingdom.

The Pyramid Texts were written in an unusual hieroglyphic style; many of the hieroglyphs representing humans or animals were left incomplete or drawn mutilated, most likely to prevent them causing any harm to the dead pharaoh.

In the Middle Kingdom , a new funerary text emerged, the Coffin Texts. The Coffin Texts used a newer version of the language, new spells, and included illustrations for the first time.

The Coffin Texts were most commonly written on the inner surfaces of coffins, though they are occasionally found on tomb walls or on papyri.

The earliest known occurrence of the spells included in the Book of the Dead is from the coffin of Queen Mentuhotep , of the 13th dynasty , where the new spells were included amongst older texts known from the Pyramid Texts and Coffin Texts.

Some of the spells introduced at this time claim an older provenance; for instance the rubric to spell 30B states that it was discovered by the Prince Hordjedef in the reign of King Menkaure , many hundreds of years before it is attested in the archaeological record.

By the 17th dynasty , the Book of the Dead had become widespread not only for members of the royal family, but courtiers and other officials as well.

At this stage, the spells were typically inscribed on linen shrouds wrapped around the dead, though occasionally they are found written on coffins or on papyrus.

The New Kingdom saw the Book of the Dead develop and spread further. From this period onward the Book of the Dead was typically written on a papyrus scroll, and the text illustrated with vignettes.

During the 19th dynasty in particular, the vignettes tended to be lavish, sometimes at the expense of the surrounding text.

In the Third Intermediate Period , the Book of the Dead started to appear in hieratic script, as well as in the traditional hieroglyphics.

The hieratic scrolls were a cheaper version, lacking illustration apart from a single vignette at the beginning, and were produced on smaller papyri.

At the same time, many burials used additional funerary texts, for instance the Amduat. During the 25th and 26th dynasties , the Book of the Dead was updated, revised and standardised.

Spells were consistently ordered and numbered for the first time. In the Late period and Ptolemaic period , the Book of the Dead remained based on the Saite recension, though increasingly abbreviated towards the end of the Ptolemaic period.

The last use of the Book of the Dead was in the 1st century BCE, though some artistic motifs drawn from it were still in use in Roman times.

The Book of the Dead is made up of a number of individual texts and their accompanying illustrations. Most sub-texts begin with the word ro, which can mean "mouth," "speech," "spell," "utterance," "incantation," or "a chapter of a book.

At present, some spells are known, [15] though no single manuscript contains them all. They served a range of purposes. Some are intended to give the deceased mystical knowledge in the afterlife, or perhaps to identify them with the gods: Still others protect the deceased from various hostile forces or guide him through the underworld past various obstacles.

Famously, two spells also deal with the judgement of the deceased in the Weighing of the Heart ritual. Such spells as 26—30, and sometimes spells 6 and , relate to the heart and were inscribed on scarabs.

The texts and images of the Book of the Dead were magical as well as religious. Magic was as legitimate an activity as praying to the gods, even when the magic was aimed at controlling the gods themselves.

The act of speaking a ritual formula was an act of creation; [20] there is a sense in which action and speech were one and the same thing.

Hieroglyphic script was held to have been invented by the god Thoth , and the hieroglyphs themselves were powerful. Written words conveyed the full force of a spell.

The spells of the Book of the Dead made use of several magical techniques which can also be seen in other areas of Egyptian life.
